Jane Austen was born in 1775 and died in 1817.

The Victorian era lasted the reign of Queen Victoria. This was from 1837 to 1901.

Jane Austen was NOT a Victorian writer.

Pride and Prejudice, arguably her most famously quoted/talked about/remade book, was published during the Regency era.

The Victorian and Regency eras are pretty different. It’s kind of amazing people mix up the two.

*********

we’ve seen people mix up victorian with the following:

1)  medieval

2)  restoration

3)  regency

4)  edwardian (of course)

5) and of course the current year, 2012, is often confused with the victorian era by the republican party and, totally coincidentally, the taliban.

what’s really funny is the victorian era wasn’t nearly as conservative socially as, say, 1953.  also, there’s a lot of confusion about the victorian era because how you experienced it very much depended on where you lived.  so if you were in england, say, it was one way, but if you were on the western frontier, it was quite another.

eras prove einstein’s space/time theories in very interesting ways!

ps:  as fish we must sing the praises of the victorian era’s progress from whalebone stays to steel!  see, every species has a different view of the situation as well!
